Tuning Your Guitar

Guitar strings are commonly tuned to these notes starting from the thickest to the thinnest.
E-A-D-G-B-E
The easiest way to tune your guitar is to purchase a guitar tuner.
This should only cost about $29.00 for a decent one.
I have used a Korg tuner for many years at home and at hundreds of gigs.
I recommend the Korg GA2 tuner.
It also has a microphone that picks up the sound of your acoustic guitar.
It is accurate and reliable.
200 hrs battery life and a five year warranty.
Good for tuning acoustic guitars, electric guitars, ukeleles, and bass guitars.
It is an excellent choice

Here are the tuning pegs and the open notes of each string.

Or you can tune the guitar to these notes.
Here are the notes of the open strings from the 6th string (Thickest) to the the 1rst string (Thinnest).

6th string E note

5th string A note

4th string D note

3rd string G note

2nd string B note

1rst string E note

If your guitar is in tune it will not be a bad sound.
It will sound like this.

Here is another way to tune your guitar using this method.

Fifth Fret Tuning

Use this method only if you do not have a tuner or another tuned instrument to tune to.
If the lowest or thickest string is relatively in tune, close to an "E" note
below middle "C" on a piano, you can tune the guitar to itself by using
the fifth fret method or relative tuning.

Fifth String-A
Place your finger on the fifth fret (on the space before the fret) of the sixed string
Keeping your finger on the fifth fret, play both the sixth string and the "open" fifth string
one at a time. Raise or lower the pitch of fifth string string using the tuning machines until both notes sound the same. The fifth string is now tuned to an "A" note.

It will sound like this audio sample.
5th string A note

Fourth String-D
Now place your finger on the fifth fret (on the space before the fret) of the fifth string
Keeping your finger on the fifth fret, play both the fifth string and the "open" fourth string
one at a time. Raise or lower the pitch of fourth string string using the tuning machines until both notes sound the same. The fourth string is now tuned to a "D" note.

It will sound like this audio sample.
4th string D Note

Third String-G
Place your finger on the fifth fret of the fourth string
Keeping your finger on the fifth fret, play both the fourth string and the "open" third string
one at a time. Raise or lower the pitch of third string string using the tuning machines until both notes sound the same. The third string played "open" is now tuned to a "G" note

It will sound like this audio sample.
3rd string G Note

Second string-B
Tuning the second string is a bit different
Place your finger on the "fourth" fret of the third string
Keeping your finger on the "fourth" fret, play both the third string and the "open" second string
one at a time. Raise or lower the pitch of third string string using the tuning machines until both notes sound the same. The second string played "open" is now tuned to a "B" note

First String
Place your finger on the fifth fret of the second string
Keeping your finger on the fifth fret, play both the second string and the "open" firts string
one at a time. Raise or lower the pitch of third string string using the tuning machines until both notes sound the same. The second string played "open" is now tuned to a "E" note

Go back and do this again until the guitar is in tune
You can also use this method starting on the first string if it is tuned relatively close to an "E" note.
As you can see tuning with a guitar tuner is way easier

Stum the guitar now from the thickest string (6th string-thickest) to the highest.
All the strings are open or not fretted.
If your guitar is in tune it will not be a bad sound.
It will sound like this.

Now that your guitar is in tune you will learn where to place your fingers to play chords.
You will first need to learn how to read a chord diagram.
